Bullying Isn’t Nice

Students at the West Prep Academy talk about bullying. Bullying is aggressive behavior that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power or strength. Often, it is repeated over time and can take many forms. In many respects, research on bullying prevention is still in its infancy. Although researchers have documented success of some comprehensive programs in reducing bullying, we still have much to learn about which aspects of these programs are most important*.

This video have been created and directed by Pablo Herrera, with Alex Faoro, Kent Jackman, Nolan Padilla, Nathael Louis and Shonda Westbrook, through a series of after school workshops developed with more than 70 students at the West Preparatory Academy in Harlem, New York City.

Reel Works Teen Filmmaking, the organization behind this after school program at the “West Prep,” has been founded in Brooklyn 20 years ago. Reel Works serves over 800 youth annually from middle school through high school and beyond, developing them as young artists and citizens and helping them graduate, get into college, and launch careers in media. It’s a powerful combination that changes young lives while creating startling and original films that have been seen by millions of viewers worldwide.

Teenagers are great consumers of audiovisuals contents, but do they always use them to their advantage?

With “Mira’T Vídeo Canal Adolescent” my Organization Colectivo Piloto and the Barcelona City Council: Consorci d’Educació have given teenagers the opportunity to experience what really is behind the screen. By producing the content themselves they reach a better understanding and use of the media.

As the project has grown, more members of the school community have become involved and the workshop has been transformed into an intercommunal space where creativity and enterprise blossom, not only among the young producers, but also among other students, professors, educators, parents and all members of the school community.

Sant Jordi day is a Catalan tradition where men offer roses to women and women offer books to men.

Willing to modernize Sant Jordi, my Organization Colectivo Piloto and the Garcilaso Youth Community Center (Barcelona City Council) came up with “MobilePOEMES3gp”. During this one day event, the passersby were prompted to record an improvised poem in front of a camera producing a less-than-one-minute video piece that they could send to their peers via bluetooth.

“MobilePOEMES3gp” gives fresh air to an old, but appreciated tradition and promotes citizens communication skills through a creative use of electronics devices.

Intercultural Workshops. Save the Children

Via Colectivo Piloto

Filmmaking workshops developed in public high schools of Barcelona, Spain; to celebrate the cultural diversity and improve social integration.

The population of Spain is changing: In the last twenty years, more than 1 million persons have immigrated from Latin America, Asia and East Europe.

To improve the relationships between local and immigrants, the Spanish branch of the non-profit organization Save the Children in co-production with my organization Colectivo Piloto conducted diversity workshops in public high-schools of Barcelona asking the young participants to talk about their family and origins.

Telling their story and hearing those of their schoolmates raised the children’s awareness of their cultural differences. They were able to understand that these differences were not barriers, but rather tremendous opportunities to learn from diversity.
