Teenagers are great consumers of audiovisuals contents, but do they always use them to their advantage?
With “Mira’T Vídeo Canal Adolescent” my Organization Colectivo Piloto and the Barcelona City Council: Consorci d’Educació have given teenagers the opportunity to experience what really is behind the screen. By producing the content themselves they reach a better understanding and use of the media.
As the project has grown, more members of the school community have become involved and the workshop has been transformed into an intercommunal space where creativity and enterprise blossom, not only among the young producers, but also among other students, professors, educators, parents and all members of the school community.

Filmmaking workshops developed in public high schools of Barcelona, Spain; to celebrate the cultural diversity and improve social integration.
The population of Spain is changing: In the last twenty years, more than 1 million persons have immigrated from Latin America, Asia and East Europe.
To improve the relationships between local and immigrants, the Spanish branch of the non-profit organization Save the Children in co-production with my organization Colectivo Piloto conducted diversity workshops in public high-schools of Barcelona asking the young participants to talk about their family and origins.
Telling their story and hearing those of their schoolmates raised the children’s awareness of their cultural differences. They were able to understand that these differences were not barriers, but rather tremendous opportunities to learn from diversity.

Within the “Spanish Program for The Promotion and Protection of Children’s Rights,” Colectivo Piloto joined Save the Children to produce short videos involving more than sixty students from Barcelona, Argentina and Paraguay.
“PARTICIPACCIÓ: Protagonistes dels nostres Drets” (Participaction: Leading Our Rights) aimed to create links between students from Spain and Latin America and to help raise awareness: By answering questions such as: ‘Do all children have the same rights throughout the world?’ they were inspired to think about the different levels of rights that children from all over the world have.
Students from the IES Princep de Viana in Barcelona have been participated in the project during the 2010’s course. Students were taught to learn all the craft on the filmmaking process.

As a result, the students from Barcelona created a short film which I directed called “Actuant pel nostres Drets” (Acting For Our Rights) to promotes children’s rights.

And after 6 moths of hard work, the students from Barcelona were ready to release their short in a movie theater.

It was an honor for me and my Team of Colectivo Piloto to feel part of this accomplishment by following Save The Children in their mission and conveying their message.

Filmmaking workshops for public high-schools students in the city of Barcelona, Spain.
Gender equality, poverty and environment are important values that need to be assimilated by the youths. What a better place than public school to teach them how to preserve and take care of those values?
With “Tardor Solidària” (Autumn Outreach,) my organization Colectivo Piloto gathered more than 600 young people from 15 Barcelona public high-schools to learn, discuss and develop ideas through creative activities. By doing so, “Tardor Solidària” contributed to the development of their analytical skills and intellect.
Tardor Solidaria is a project promoted by Espai Jove Garcilaso (Youth Community Center), a dependency of the Barcelona City Council in the Sant Andreu Borough. I have led this filmmaking workshops for more than 6 years between 2007 and 2006.

kdm;) is a humorous Web Series produced by teenagers and broadcasted online.
kdm;) is the second part of “El Culebron del Barri”, an educational project to develop a Web Series with teens sponsored by the Barcelona City Council.
I designed and lead kdm;), a project where more than seventy teens from Barcelona were selected to learn the craft of filmmaking, from pre-production to post-production.
Through a series of workshops, teens were given the necessary tools to produce “kdm;)”. Over the course of two years, from 2010 to 2012, The Colectivo Piloto’s team that I lead helped them with the coordination of casting, acting, script writing, decoration set design, hair and makeup, lighting, filming, editing and broadcasting.
The following images explain the structure of the project. The structure took to years to be completed.
Phase #1, Preliminary: Research and Teamwork
First of all my team of educators and I selected some teens to create an strong teamwork to develop the project. With this Motor Team we designed the project, from the brand to the strategy to developed the casting process.
Phase #2. Pre-production 1: Castings and Production Design
The Motorteam of kdm;) create the strategies to attract young people to participate in the project. First of all they made a series of videos to promote the online casting in each craft of filmmaking: screenwriting, acting, camera and light department, makeup, art department, sound design and soundtrack. More than 200 teens uploaded their casting to participate. 70 of them were selected to develop the project.
Phase #3. Pre-production 2: Training and Creative Workshops
This phase was conducted in two stages. The first one was focus on training, where a team of 10 educators taught all the craft of filmmaking to the teens selected during 3 months.

Phase #4. Production: Shooting
In this phase the students have had the opportunity to put in practice everything they had learned in the previous phases.

BCN Crea: A Web Series at Sant Andreu Borough

Phase #5. Post-production: Edition
After the shooting they was training to develop the post-producción and to design the strategies to promote the Web Series.
Phase #6. Release
After two of hard work, teens were finally ready to release their work.
Phase #7. Last, but not the end: Independence to a self teens production company
At the end of the project, the young participants gained entrepreneurial skills and created their own film company: Arsomnia Productions.

To support the social integration of youth from immigrant neighborhoods of Barcelona, Spain, Obra Social Fundación La Caixa and Save the Children co-sponsored a program called “Caixa ProInfancia”.

During these workshops, youth are asked to comment thoughtfully on their own activities, both inside and outside of their school: What is different when they return home? How can they relate the uniqueness of their culture to their peers at school?
I have been managing the audiovisual workshops in after-school programs at several public high schools in Barcelona during the 2010 course.
The resulting videos show the community the important role that culturally-relevant after-school programs play in the social integration of people in need.
