During the Future Filmmakers Summer Media Camp at the Museum of the Moving Image, New York City, campers experience the craft of the documentary filmmaking by discussing, exploring, conceptualizing and finally representing the concepts of origin, cultural identity and diversity. Under this premise kids learn how to use diverse documentary techniques as a medium to tell stories in the most effective way getting across the themes that they are learning about. The Future Filmmakers Summer Media Camp, conducted by the filmmaker Pablo Herrera and assisted by Leonardo Santana is the perfect way for children to explore something new, express their creativity, and experiment with technology.

Let’s Talk About Human Rights

During the After School Program at West Preparatory Academy in Harlem New York City, Students have interviewed each other about the meaning of Human Rights.

The following interview fragments have been an important piece to define the topics and contents developed by the students during the 2017/18 program.

As a result, the students developed a series of activities around issues such as gender equality, Rights of the Child, democracy, immigration, diversity and racism among others.

The program has ended with a visit to the United Nations Headquarters and the realization of several short documentaries to defend and promote Human Rights.

Better Call the Principal

Students at West Prep Academy in Harlem, New York City, interviewing the Principal for their short documentary “Better Call the Principal”.

Reel Works Teen Filmmaking, the organization behind this after school program at the “West Prep,” has been founded in Brooklyn 20 years ago. Reel Works serves over 800 youth annually from middle school through high school and beyond, developing them as young artists and citizens and helping them graduate, get into college, and launch careers in media. It’s a powerful combination that changes young lives while creating startling and original films that have been seen by millions of viewers worldwide.

International Girls’ Day

Students at West Prep Academy celebrate the International Girls’s Day. The “Day of the Girl” is an international observance day declared by the United Nations. October 11, 2012, was the first “Day of the Girl”. The observation supports more opportunity for girls and increases awareness of gender.
